GRANTHAM, JARED J., AND MAURICE B. BURG. Effect ofuasopressin and cyclic AMP on permeability of isolated collecting tubules. Am. J. Physiol. 21 I (I) : 255-259. rg66.-The effect of vasopressin and cyclic 3’,5’-AMP on the permeability to water and urea of the isolated perfused rabbit collecting tubule was measured. When added to the solution bathing the outside of the tubule, these agents regularly increased both net water absorption along an osmotic gradient and the diffusional permeability to water as measured with THO in the absence of an osmotic gradient. When added only to the solution bathing the luminal border of the cells, vasopressin was ineffective. Urea permeability was not significantly altered by either vasopressin or cyclic 3’) $-AMP despite simultaneous increases in water permeability.

Effect of prostaglandin E1 on the permeability response of the isolated collecting tubule to vasopressin, adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate, and theophylline.
The effect of prostaglandin E(1) (PGE(1)) on the water permeability response to vasopressin, theophylline, and cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (C-AMP) of isolated, perfused collecting tubules of the rabbit was investigated in vitro. Prostaglandin is a naturally occurring substance present in a number of tissues, including kidney. It has been implicated in the action of a variety of hormone...
متن کاملInhibition by lithium of the hydroosmotic action of vasopressin in the isolated perfused cortical collecting tubule of the rabbit.
Because treatment with lithium salts may impair renal concentrating ability, we investigated the possibility of a direct effect of lithium ions on the permeability to water of the collecting duct epithelium. The coefficient of hydraulic conductivity (Lp) of isolated perfused rabbit cortical collecting tubules (CCT) was measured in the presence and absence of arginine-8-vasopressin (AVP), or 8-b...
متن کاملAtrial natriuretic factor inhibits vasopressin-stimulated osmotic water permeability in rat inner medullary collecting duct.
The inner medullary collecting duct (IMCD) has been proposed to be a site of atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) action. We carried out experiments in isolated perfused terminal IMCDs to determine whether ANF (rat ANF 1-28) affects either osmotic water permeability (Pf) or urea permeability. In the presence of a submaximally stimulating concentration of vasopressin (10(-11) M), ANF (100 nM) signifi...

متن کاملAn independent effect of osmolality on urea transport in rat terminal inner medullary collecting ducts.
We have shown that urea transport across the terminal inner medullary collecting duct (terminal IMCD) is mediated by a vasopressin-stimulated, facilitated diffusion process exhibiting properties consistent with a transporter. To investigate whether hypertonic NaCl, as exists in vivo in the inner medulla, affects urea permeability, we studied isolated perfused rat terminal IMCD segments. Perfusa...
